Lillianah is developing effective technology to remove unwanted pollutants from waterways, including in estuaries and nearshore marine environments. The company accomplishes this by standing up physical projects and deploying a biology-first solution, dispersing healthy native diatoms in local waters - its differentiator. Since late 2022, Lillianah has worked in collaboration with Invest Nova Scotia, establishing connections through Cape Breton University, Central Cape Breton Community Ventures, Inc. (CCBCVI), and the Verschuren Centre. This partnership has been key to the company’s progression and momentum this year in the Bras d’Or Lake system and Bedford Basin located in Nova Scotia. In just 7 months, Lillianah has carried out extensive project reconnaissance via Cape Breton University’s Lead Ecology Professor; obtained approval to carry out the first two phases of its project via a Letter of Advice from Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans; and gave the keynote talk at World Ocean Day 2024 in Iona, Cape Breton (8th Annual Àros na Mara World Oceans Day Festival – Àros na Mara (arosnamara.ca)) - an instrumental step towards meeting and engaging with several local influential stakeholders including Elders and a Chief of First Nations. The breadth of communications and engagement has already been remarkable, highlighted by CBC Radio’s interview of Ben Slotnick (Founder of Lillianah), along with local press through Victoria County’s newspaper and Saltwire. In 2024, Lillianah also retained two local personnel - a marine biologist, and George Boyd, its lead engineer - both trained from Dalhousie University to lead the company’s Nova Scotia efforts in Bennett Brulé. As a result of all these accomplishments, Lillianah now has all the necessary information to establish its technology in Nova Scotia.
